Your 2016 guide to Food Trucks and Street Food in Montréal
Montréal’s food truck scene has been a work in progress. What started
off as a modest pilot project by The Quebec Food Truck Association
three years ago has now blossomed into one of the most anticipated
culinary attractions of the year.
In a relatively short period of time, the street food initiative has expanded right across the city. From a handful of food trucks parked in nine different locations in the city centre in 2013, the fleet now boasts over 50 trucks covering 30 designated parking/vending locations spanning 15 boroughs on the island.
If you’re out and about taking in the sights and sounds of Montréal in the summer, here’s everything you need to know about street eats and food trucks.
Starting April 1 and running until late fall, a variety of food trucks will rotate among 30 predetermined locations in Montréal East, Longue-Pointe, Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, Little Italy, Mile End, the Village, the Quartier des Spectacles, the Old Port, Côte-des-Neiges, Downtown, Griffintown, Saint-Henri, Verdun, Montréal West and Lasalle.

The flashy artwork-wrapped trucks match the eclectic and diverse menus offered by each of the vendors. Choices range from food truck mainstays like grilled cheeses, pulled pork and bacon everything to mobile haute cuisine like foie gras poutine and lobster truffle cappuccino by the likes of Chef Martin Picard (Camion Au Pied de Cochon) and Chef Jérôme Ferrer (Europea Mobile), respectively.
Summers in Montréal are synonymous with festivals, and what’s a festival without food? Luckily, some of these food trucks will be making an appearance during the city’s most happening street festivals to help you celebrate in true foodie style.
First Fridays
The largest food truck gathering in North America happens on the first Friday of every month starting May 6 at the Esplanade Financière Sun Life at the Olympic Park from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Whether you’re craving tacos, lobster rolls, delicious burgers, homemade pogos, donuts or pierogis, the menu options are endless and will satiate your appetite. A 300-seat terrasse and bar, brought to you by Buvette Alsace and Beaujolais, will be available. Thanks to Evenko, you can also enjoy live music by renowned bands and DJs in a warm and inviting atmosphere that’s fun for all ages. Free entrance.
Feux Gourmands
From July 1 until August 1 on fireworks nights, the Clock Tower Quay in the Old Port of Montréal becomes a giant BBQ bash featuring a terrasse with a front row view of the International des Feux Loto-Québec fireworks. Visitors are invited to grill their own food on charcoal grills provided or enjoy some of the food trucks that will be on site. 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., free entrance.
Night Market
Night Market is a block party hosted by Les Survenants in the heart of the Mile Ex neighbourhood that brings together local vendors, DJs and delicious food. On the last Saturday of every month from May to September (2 p.m. to 11 p.m.), browse the tables of local artisans and snack on street food prepared by some of the best food trucks in town. Located in front of Alexandraplatz Bar, 6731 De l’Esplanade Avenue.
Bouffons MTL
Bouffons MTL is a food festival that takes place in tandem with the Just for Laughs Festival. From July 16 to 30 wander through the culinary village on the corner of Saint-Catherine and Clark Streets and entice your senses. Food and fun awaits you in the heart of the Quartier des spectacles.
YUL EAT
YUL EAT is an exciting food festival that takes place at the Clock Tower Quay in the Old Port during Labour Day weekend. The event features food tastings, cooking demonstrations, speakers and themed dinners and brunches. More information available soon.
